Governor Veto of required police enforcement immigration
Please make sure Governor hears from you--let her know how grateful we are!
Today Governor Napolitano vetoed HB 2807, a bill that would have required every police and sheriff's department in Arizona to engage in enforcement of federal immigration laws.
At a time when budget deficits are forcing many communities to make cuts to basic services, law enforcement agencies cannot afford to take on the burden of another unfunded mandate.
This bill would have compromised public safety by shifting law enforcement away from their top priority: protecting the public from violent and property crimes.

Many thanks also to Rep. Steve Gallardo , Rep. Pete Ríos and our other steadfast progressive legislators for standing up for public safety and civil rights.
This fight is not over.
We expect the backers of this measure to try to place it on the ballot through a referendum, and we need your help in stopping that from happening. (The Governor cannot veto referenda.)
Please contact your legislators and let them know that you oppose any measure that would distract Arizona's police and sheriff's departments from their public safety priorities by burdening them with the task of checking citizenship papers.
